Forty million people visit Vegas every year but most never get past
the strip. What about the people who live there? What brought them
there? What keeps them there?Author: Doug Cooper
Publisher: Rare Bird Books
Pages: 362
Genre: Literary/Upmarket Fiction
Told from the perspective of a seasoned blackjack dealer, The Investment Club tells the stories of a self-destructive, dwarf entrepreneur, a drug-addicted musical performer-turned-stripper, a retired, widowed New Jersey policeman, a bereaved, divorced female sportscaster, and a card-counting, former Catholic priest before and after their fateful meeting at the El Cortez Casino in downtown Vegas.
As the five learn the greatest return comes from investing in one another, their lives stabilize and take on new, positive directions. But their love and support for each other can take them only so far before they must determine the meaning and value of their own lives.

MY THOUGHTS
If you've ever been to Vegas, you know that the thing that draws you the most is...the strip. It's like an addiction. People by the thousand visit Vegas during a year's time. What is the attraction to people that live there and have for years?
The author gives a story that moves quickly and goes back and forth between the past and present. The characters have a lot going on. The story is about five people, a stripper who once was a musician, now addicted to drugs, a cop who is widowed from Jersey, a female sportscaster who is recently divorced, an entrepreneur who is bent on destroying himself, and believe it or not, a once Catholic priest. The story of their lives is being told by a blackjack dealer. It seems a lot might be said around a blackjack table. All the excitement, the drinks, the thought of winning bring people to let loose and talk freely. The story is before their meeting at the El Cortez Casino and then after their meeting. The five of this mismatched group learn to rely or invest in each other and in doing so their lives begin to go in a different direction. But relying on another person can only take a person so far and then you have to rely on yourself. The blackjack dealer probably knows these five people as well as anyone in their lives.
The author has given characters that through the descriptions, you feel you know them, what has made them who they are and perhaps why they have grown to invest in each other's lives. There are probably thousands of these kind of people, lost and down on their luck. Sort of cast offs of society who only need someone, anyone to listen, to care, to INVEST their time, their attention, their love and their support. But a person can't rely on someone else to hold them up and hold them together for only so long. After that, it's up to them to keep their lives on the right path.
That trip to the Vegas strip can be a good life changing trip for some, but for others it's a another kind of life changing experience and that can be bad.
I received a copy of this book from the author and PUYB and voluntarily decided to review it.
I would give this book 4 STARS.
