Introducing Poppy Denby, a young journalist in London during the Roaring Twenties, investigating crime in the highest social circles
It is 1920. Twenty-two year old Poppy Denby moves from Northumberland to live with her paraplegic aunt in London. Aunt Dot, a suffragette who was injured in battles with the police in 1910, is a feisty and well-connected lady.
Poppy has always dreamed of being a journalist, and quickly lands a position as an editorial assistant at the Daily Globe. Then one of the paper's hacks, Bert Isaacs, dies suddenly and messily. Poppy and photographer Daniel Rokeby (with whom Poppy has an immediate and mutual attraction) begin to wonder if Bert was pushed. His story was going to be the morning lead, but he hasn't finished writing it. Poppy finds his notes and completes the story, which is a sensation.
The Globe's editor, realising her valuable suffragette contacts, invites her to dig deeper. Poppy starts sifting through the dead man's files and unearths a major mystery which takes her to France--and abruptly into danger.

Dancing Skeletons Clip ArtREVIEW
The author, Fiona Veitch Smith has given the reader a book t hat they can become part of a different era.  You get a sense of knowing the characters.  You're back in the 1920's.  What an era?  Wouldn't it have been fascinating to be part of that?  You come close from the author.

Aunt Dot, who lives in London asks Poppy Denby to come and help her because of her disability.  Poppy lives North of England.  But it soon comes to light that this was just a plan to
get Poppy away from her parents.   Dot doesn't believe she will grow and follow her dream to be a journalist if she stays with her parents.

Poppy is finally given the chance to prove that women can be just as good as men.  This comes at the expense of senior reporter from "The Globe" when he is killed. Poppy takes over where the deceased reporter left off. This is a world that Poppy isn't familiar with. The journalistic world often goes into another world that is filled with secrets, evil and darkness that sometimes, has been going on for decades. Will Poppy discover the truth before she becomes a victim?  Someone wants to stop her from finding out the truth.

The author must have done a considerable amount of research into the 1920's.  It shows in the book.  The author gives the reader characters that are humorous and yet courageous. Then, of course, the romance enters.   Poppy and Daniel, who is a photographer at The Globe, start being interested in each other.   Will a romance develop?  Or is Poppy to involved in her journalism?
Eagerly waiting Book Two to find out more about Poppy and her life.

I received a complimentary copy of THE JAZZ FILES from the author, Fiona Veitch Smith and Kregel Blog Tours for my view of the book. No other compensation took place.

I would give this book 5 STARS.
