It's 1800. Mad King George is on the British throne, and Bonaparte is hammering at the door. Magic is strictly controlled by the Mysterium, but despite severe penalties, not all magic users have registered. Integral to many genteel households is an uncomplaining army of rowankind bondservants, so commonplace that no one recalls where they came from. Ross Tremayne, widowed, cross-dressing privateer captain and unregistered witch, likes her life on the high seas, accompanied by a boatload of swashbuckling pirates and the possessive ghost of her late husband, Will. When she pays a bitter deathbed visit to her long-estranged mother she inherits a half brother she didn't know about and a task she doesn't want: open the magical winterwood box and right an ancient wrong—if she can. Enter Corwen. He's handsome, sexy, clever, and capable, and Ross doesn't really like him; neither does Will's ghost. Can he be trusted? Whose side is he on? Unable to chart a course to her future until she's unraveled the mysteries of the past, she has to evade a ruthless government agent who fights magic with darker magic, torture, and murder; and brave the hitherto hidden Fae. Only then can she hope to open the magical winterwood box and right her ancestor's wrongdoing. Unfortunately, success may prove fatal to both Ross and her new brother, and disastrous for the country. By righting a wrong, is Ross going to unleash a terrible evil? Is her enemy the real hero and Ross the villain?

REVIEW
On the British throne sits Mad King George.  Hammering at the door is Bonaparte. In spite of repercussions, magic users have not all registered with the Mysterium. Bondservants, which no one knows where they originally came from are part of most every household. A captain, Ross Tremayne, who is widowed, a cross-dresser, and an unregistered witch, lives on the seas. Along with her is her deceased husband in ghost form and a band of pirates..  She finds out she has a half brother and she inherits the job of righting a wrong.  That means opening the magical winterwood box. That is is she can? Then a man of all men enters. Ross doesn't like Corwen.  The ghost of Ross's late husband doesn't like him either.  She can't figure out whose side he is on? Is he out for himself or are his intentions honorable.? In order to right this wrong, she must go against a villainous agent who works for the government.   She finds out he fights magic with the dark form of magic, sometimes torture and even murder.  She also must go up against the hidden Fae.  Will she ever get to the magical winterwood box and right this age old wrong.  Will Ross and her new brother have success and will fate raise it's ugly head.?  Will disaster strike? Will evil win?
