SUMMARY
Sixteen-year-old Meg Traherne has never known loss. Until the beautiful, talented horse she trained herself, drops dead underneath her in the show ring.

Jared Strickland has been living with loss ever since his father died in a tragic farming accident.

Meg escapes from her grief by changing everything about her life; moving away from home to spend her summer living on an island in the St. Lawrence River, scrubbing toilets and waiting on guests at a B&B.

Once there, she meets Jared; doing his best to keep anything else in his life from changing.

When Jared offers Meg a scruffy appaloosa mare out of a friend’s back field, it’s the beginning of a journey that will change both of them by the end of the summer.

REVIEW
The book is an easy read that would be just right for Middle School readers and also YA readers. I must say I don't usually like reading about horses but this book held so much more. The author evidently has quite a bit of knowledge of ranches and horses. The main character, Meg was very likable.  She had so much pep and a good outlook on things.  Even through her own grief, she took it slow to deal with it through time.  She was a typical teen age girl out on her own, of course it was only for the summer. I found her life to be fascinating and encouraging.  Jared brought in the love part of the book.  The author didn't just add Jared to make a romance but to share the grief and his fear of leaving the island.  The emotions in this book felt so real. I could relate to the anxiety that Jared felt.  The author just eased it in.  It didn't take over the whole plot.  Just casually put in. I wished Slate had been more of a prominent figure int he story.  I wanted to know more about her. I'm hoping there will be a book two with more action and much more drama.  The book was a little boring. I guess I wanted a little conflict between the characters.  It was just a little too smooth and easy for me.  Of course, this book is written more along the lines for YA and Middle Schoolers.   Sometimes they aren't into the drama so much as an adult would be.  All in all it was a good read and I'm hoping with a possible Book Two, the storyline will pick up and be a little more realistic.

I was given a complimentary copy of APPALOOSA SUMMER from the author Tudor Robins and PumpUpYourBook Virtual Book Tours for my view of the book.  No other compensation took place.

I would give this book 4 COWBOY HATS.
