MY PRISON WITHOUT BARS: THE JOURNEY OF A DAMAGED WOMAN TO SOMEPLACE NORMAL is a novel based on a true story...Taylor's story.

MY PRISON WITHOUT BARS is a courageous and harrowing journey through the catacombs of hell, from the mind and voice of a little girl living with her own monster underneath her bed. Written in first person, this novel is not a memoir, but more a psychological thriller, based on true events, chronicling one woman's attempt to claw her way out of the darkness of Child Sexual Abuse, while struggling to find normal, in a not-so-normal world.
It is poignant, dark and graphic; not for the faint of heart. This novel will make you feel.

AUTHOR
Taylor Evan Fulks is a practicing Registered Nurse First Assistant specializing in open heart surgery. She's a wife, and mother of two teenage daughters, residing in southern Ohio, along the banks of the Ohio River.  Since the age of thirteen, she has been a prolific storyteller, dreaming of one day becoming a writer and sharing her stories with others, but real life pushed those dreams aside.  Now, with her children almost grown, her career mastered and steady, she feels compelled to tell her own story...MY PRISON WITHOUT BARS, before she can write what she truly loves...Mystery/Romance.

Taylor is currently working on a romantic thriller, also based on a true story.
REVIEW
This story is written by  the author's own experience.a truly talented writer.  I found the book hard to relate to and I don't think the reader could without having gone through the tragedy themselves. The subject matter  to me would be  a hard thing to write about.  The story is laid out  on the table with no hold backs.  I believe as I read the book, I gained some insight into the subject.   To me, the author, brought out the shame, hurt, damage and sometimes long lasting memories that this can do to a person.   As the author states, there is help available for the victims.  Without help, a person may be scarred for life.  The events may be hidden deep in the mind, until one day, something triggers that hidden event. I discovered through the book that with professional help, a person can come through the abuse a strong and productive person.  I believe it depends on the person and how quickly and successful the treatment is.
The book is a hard read, but much understanding can come from reading it.   It is not for the faint of heart.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author, Taylor Evan Fulks for my view of the book.  No other compensation took place.

I would give this book 4 PLUSES.

From the Author

Have you ever lived with a shameful secret? Afraid that someone or something would 'rat' you out...expose your demons for the entire world to see? Have you ever been in so much darkness that you didn't know how to find the light?

If so, then you'll no doubt identify with Taylor's story; a saga much like Sapphire's Push, that became the Academy Award-winning movie, Precious.
My Prison Without Bars is a poignant, yet dark account of one woman's struggle to find "normal," as well as light and hope along her journey.

I wrote this novel in first person, from the mind, body, and heart of a child. I didn't want to shock or be grotesque...I wanted people to truly know the permanent damage that is inflicted, to know the depths of fear and self-loathing, and to really feel through the experiences of an abused child.

My goal was to exorcise my demons, gain some sense of self-esteem, heal myself, and finally tell my dirty little secret with full disclosure, while giving the reader full access to my heart. Oddly, I didn't find the outcomes I expected...absolution, understanding, and self-forgiveness. But I did find something I didn't expect...Acceptance.

My life is what it is. My experiences happened in the past. I don't live there anymore. I can choose to be angry and ashamed for the rest of my life, or I can accept my life for what it's been, what it is now, and move toward the light...and who knows, maybe help someone else along the way. Hence, my mission statement: The rest of my life will be the best of my life. It's not about my destination...it's about the journey that gets me there.
My Prison with out Bars is a tough read....don't get me wrong, it's beautifully writen, but the subject matter is heart breaking. The ache in my heart for the little girl Taylor will not go away. I just wanted to swoop in and take her away from all of her horrors.

This book reminds us all of the abuses inflicted up children (both girls and boys) not only around the world but in our great nation. We need to be more observant of what is going on around us, and if we suspect abuse we need to report it, not turn a blind eye. We also need to make sure that children know that it is ok to speak up and that these acts are not acceptable behavior.

It is truly amazing that someone can survive these years and years of abuse and still turn out to be a productive member of society, wife and loving mother. It shows true character. I hope this book will inspire others and it shows that just because you were abused doesn't mean you will turn out to be an abuser.

Bravo To Taylor Fulks for being able to open her soul to us and share her innermost secrets and demons, you are an amazing lady!
