CHRISTY
by
Catherine Marshall
Some stories are evergreen, their themes and lessons standing the test of time and connecting with readers generation after generation. Reconnect with Catherine Marshall's beloved Christy as it celebrates its 50th anniversary with a new edition!
The train taking nineteen-year-old teacher Christy Huddleston from her home in Asheville, North Carolina, might as well be transporting her to another world. The Smoky Mountain community of Cutter Gap feels suspended in time, trapped by poverty, superstitions, and century-old traditions.
But as Christy struggles to find acceptance in her new home, some see her — and her one-room school — as a threat to their way of life. Her faith is challenged and her heart is torn between two strong men with conflicting views about how to care for the families of the Cove.
Yearning to make a difference, will Christy’s determination and devotion be enough?

MY THOUGHTS
This book is based on the author's mother and was a popular television series. The author's mother was a teacher in the poverty stricken backwoods of Tennessee.
Christy Huddleston, age 19, having lived in Asheville, N.C. is now on a train to a place that is so different form the world she is used to. She is headed for Cutter Gap in the Smoky Mountains. A place where time has stopped. A place where people live day to day with next to nothing, not even the slightest hint of modern day life. This is all they know, from generation to generation. Their lives are surrounded by mere survival, relying on their home remedies, the hunt to keep food on the table and the superstitions that are passed down. This is their way of life.
Now a stranger is coming to a one room school house. They feel this person is a threat to the life that is all they know.
But Christy is bound and determined to make a difference. Then she is torn between two different views from two strong men.
The author gives a work of fiction. Even though this is fiction, there are still, even in this modern day, people who live in the remote mountain wilderness who are stuck in time. The characters are strong and yet, each have their own human weaknesses. Christy was a character who you could visualize. A person who cared and wanted to bring change for the good of these poor mountain people. Christy's Christian upbringing helped to keep her standing firm even though there were many times she could have easily given up. The story brings about a mix of emotions, sadness, empathy, anger, caring, admiration and more.
Cutter Gap is a place in the past and yet so very much in the present. Unfortunately, it may be a place in the future.
Will Christy succeed in some way? Will she find love in these backward mountains?
I would definitely suggest this book. It will take you into a different time and place. Strong characters that you will fall in love with. Circumstances you may not like, you may disagree with but all the same you will feel in your heart. You will go away from this book with a warmness in your heart and a desire for more people like Christy to enter that remote wilderness, to bring about a little change.
