Heiress Aileen Lynch has just lost her mother to cancer, but her spendthrift stepfather insists she must cancel his gambling debts by marrying his disreputable associate. Fleeing Ireland with the help of her mother’s lawyer, she lands in Boston to stay with friends and is attracted to one of their visitors. Doctor Samuel Walker is in town to attend a medical conference. When he meets the lovely young Irishwoman he is quite taken with her and, at his colleague's entreaty, marries her and takes her home to Texas with him to keep her safe. Sam rationalizes that he doesn’t need a wife but he does need a mother for his son. While Aileen strives to earn Sam’s affection, he vows never to risk Aileen’s safety or his heart—he’ll not father a child and watch Aileen die in childbirth as his first wife did. And falling in love is not in his plans.

 MY THOUGHTS
Having to run to avoid marriage to  someone that is detestable, Aileen Lynch has defied her stepfather.  She wasn't about to marry his associate that she despised.  The marriage would have been a marriage of convenience, convenience for her step father, to pay off his gambling debts.  So with help from her mother's lawyer, she goes to Boston.  While staying with friends, she has an attraction to someone visiting. The doctor is attracted to her too.  This leads to marriage and off to Texas hoping to keep her from her stepfather. This also wasn't exactly a marriage of love, attraction yes, love, no, but a marriage to take care of the doctor's son.  The doctor wants no more children since his wife had died giving birth to his son.  He won't let that happen to Aileen or himself.  There is no room for love in his life or at least he doesn't believe so.

The author gives us Aileen.  She is placed in a situation where the only answer is to run, but what did she run to?  Another man who didn't love her.  She tried her best for his affection and she had that. He cared, not perhaps in the right way but he did care.  The author gives us the doctor who in one way you love for taking Aileen and trying to make her safe, and in another way, disliking him for using her as a mother to his son without the love a marriage needs.   He has guarded his heart for good reason.  The author wrote characters that you could feel in your heart.  You could feel the hurts, the struggles, the wants and the needs.  There is a reality to this.  Often times, people marry for convenience, not love and this is what happens here.   Will the author connect Aileen and Sam with love?   Will the stepfather leave them alone?  The pace is steady and it allows the reader to think about what the characters should do, according to the reader's thinking.  That's what was so good about the book.  You get to decide along the way, what you think should happen and as you turn the pages, you find out if you're right.  That place in your heart for Sam and Aileen gives an emotional air to the book.  Grab a copy and find out what happens in Aileen's and Sam's marriage.

I received a copy of this book from the author and Night Owl Reviews and voluntarily decided to review it.

I would give this book 4.5  STARS.
