A high stakes drama set against the harsh beauty of the Maine wilderness, charting the journey of four friends as they fight to survive the aftermath of a white water rafting accident, The River at Night is a nonstop and unforgettable thriller by a stunning new voice in fiction.

Winifred Allen needs a vacation.

Stifled by a soul-crushing job, devastated by the death of her beloved brother, and lonely after the end of a fifteen-year marriage, Wini is feeling vulnerable. So when her three best friends insist on a high-octane getaway for their annual girls’ trip, she signs on, despite her misgivings.

What starts out as an invigorating hiking and rafting excursion in the remote Allagash Wilderness soon becomes an all-too-real nightmare: A freak accident leaves the women stranded, separating them from their raft and everything they need to survive. When night descends, a fire on the mountainside lures them to a ramshackle camp that appears to be their lifeline. But as Wini and her friends grasp the true intent of their supposed saviors, long buried secrets emerge and lifelong allegiances are put to the test. To survive, Wini must reach beyond the world she knows to harness an inner strength she never knew she possessed.

With intimately observed characters, visceral prose, and pacing as ruthless as the river itself, The River at Night is a dark exploration of creatures—both friend and foe—that you won’t soon forget. ( from inside cover)

MY THOUGHTS

The narrator is Wini who has just an average life, but as you read, you get the feeling there is something amiss.   Her friends as planning a trip into the wild and she gains the courage to go along.   Was this a mistake on her part?   Things go from bad to worse and than keep going in  a downward spiral.   Then the trip goes from being an adventure to a fight for survival.  The author doesn't just give the reader an adventure but so much danger that your heart will begin to pump a little harder.  This isn't the wild of the city, this is the wild of nature.
The author writes with a "down to the point" look.   There are no frills, since this is a no thrills dangerous life that these young people are on.   Surviving nature can be a thrill but than that thrill can turn into nightmare in mere seconds.  The setting is the back woods of Maine.   As the reader turns the pages hoping for the best, the tension mounts and you begin to realize this could be for real.   The author has taken a situation that is just supposed to be a good thrilling, suspenseful read and made the reader understand that this could and possibly does happen in real life.   What a lot to think about if you're considering one of those nature trips.  Nature can be very unrelenting and very harsh even for the most prepared adventurers.  I found the scenes that took place by the river the most suspenseful and scary.   The river can be very peaceful and lovely at times but at others, it's one of the most dangerous places, especially at night. Terror is deeper and more dangerous at night.   Every sound, the animals, the wind, the river, your imaginative mind all add to that terror. Without a moon, you are in the pitch black,  every little sound is so loud.   You are cold, scared, in a dangerous situation and you're unsure what to do. You are totally unprepared for what you are facing.   The author wrote with such vivid detail, down to the sounds of the river, that you could actually feel your own heart beating fast and hard. If you live for the rush of adventure and danger, then quiet yourself, settle down and get ready for an intense trip down the river at night.   Be prepared though because you don't know where it will take you.  Also know and remember that if it can go wrong, IT WILL!

I received a copy of this book from the author and Night Owl Reviews and voluntarily decided to review it.

I would give this book  5 SOLID  STARS.
