The setting for this trilogy is the San Andres Mountains. Matthew Kerney returns from WWII to try to regain his health from a war injury. But that won't be his biggest struggle. The army wants his land. He has lost control over much of his ranch due to the government and their ways of taking land away. That is just part of Matt's problems. The women he loves and their relationship is failing. His father is getting old and can't do much around the ranch any more and someone is trying to kill him. His world is falling down around him This trilogy is the story of the Kerney family. The first book, Hard Country introduces you to the Kerney family and their lives in the mid twentieth century world of the new American West. The sequel is Backlands, and now we have The Last Ranch. The stories are very detailed with rich descriptions of the landscapes, the characters and their lives. If you can, go back and read the first novel and on to the second and third. When you are finished you will want to re-read them.
I received this complimentary book from the author, Michael McGarrity and Night Owl Reviews in exchange for my unbiased and honest review.
I would give this book 4 STARS.
