HE, A HERETIC,

LUTHER and KATHARINA
A Novel of Love and Rebellion
by
Jody Hedlund

OVERVIEW OF BOOK
(from Amazon)
In the 16th century, nun Katharina von Bora’s fate fell no further than the Abbey. Until she read the writings of Martin Luther.

His sweeping Catholic church reformation—condemning a cloistered life and promoting the goodness of marriage—awakened her desire for everything she’d been forbidden. Including Martin Luther himself.

Despite the fact that the attraction and tension between them is undeniable, Luther holds fast to his convictions and remains isolated, refusing to risk anyone’s life but his own. And Katharina longs for love, but is strong-willed. She clings proudly to her class distinction, pining for nobility over the heart of a reformer. They couldn’t be more different.

But as the world comes tumbling down around them, and with Luther’s threatened life a constant strain, these unlikely allies forge an unexpected bond of understanding, support and love.

Together, they will alter the religious landscape forever.

REVIEW
This story is a story of love and a little hate.  The author, Ms. Hedlund highlights differences in faiths, the Protestant and Catholic. The author puts in so much emotion in the story of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora. the many differences between them. The wanting of the forbidden that Katharina feels.  After being brought up in a Catholic life where marriage is sacred.  But the feelings she has keep getting stronger. She takes us from princes to the very poor, the hurt that the Germans were experiencing.  You will become so immersed in this story that you will feel that you are back in the sixteenth century with Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora. the author leaves nothing out in this historical read. Ms. Hedlund takes her talent and delights her readers with the intrigue and the forbidden that you won't be able to put the book down.  This period in time, the sixteenth century, the period of the Protestant German Reformation was filled with evil, darkness and even death. She doesn't paint a pretty picture of the pain but she doesn't make the characters saints either.  She writes them being  of reality.  This story of two people, very different and yet so alike stood ground united when their worlds were caving in.

Luther and Katharina are both very much the same.  They have many of the same characteristics, pride and determination for just a few.  When two people are so much alike, it is bound to bring about some discord.  But then, doesn't it in reality? You gain an insight into Katharina's way of thinking and also I felt that Luther brought a lot of his strife on himself.  Even so, that didn't create an excuse for his treatment of his wife, Katharina. I found I didn't find a bond with the characters.  They were interesting and well developed, but I just couldn't find that closeness.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from Blogging for Books for my unbiased review.  No other compensation took place.

I would give this book  4 STARS.
