I believe that putting in a woman D.I. in the position added to the plot. It's mainly men working with a woman in some very dangerous situations. Some men don't believe women belong in these kind of positions.
The first book in the series is GAME,SET AND MURDER which may be a good place to start instead of book two.

AUTHOR
Elizabeth Flynn is a Londoner of Anglo-Irish parentage. An ex-actress,
she currently works in a hospital. However she has always written and
has a particular interest in crime fiction. For several years she has
also been a keen tennis fan and is very happy that her first novel is a
murder mystery set in the tennis world, located at the famous tennis
tournament, Wimbledon.
Her second 'D.I.Costello' investigation, Dead Gorgeous, is set in the fashion industry. In the high-profile, glamorous surroundings of this world it isn't long before Angela Costello discovers a much less beautiful underbelly involving drugs, fraud and sexual slavery. Unravelling the mystery puts even her own life in danger.

Kristy Manners works for fashion house Ivano King as an assistant. She has dreams way above her abilities to act upon. One day, she is found dead in her apartment. Angela Costello, D.I. is called to start the investigation of her death. The D.I. is finding plenty of suspects. Ian King , her boss. He's been having a bit of a fling with her. Then there is her rough, tough guy boyfriend, Darren, who she is together with every so often.
Could there be behind the scenes actions going on? Could they lead to other crimes and deaths? An European girl who is quite bothered has asked Father Martin- Angela's local Roman Catholic Priest for help. For some reason he just can't get her out of her mind.
If you as a reader like police procedurals, this book is about a police team that gets along real well and work together well. Angela is a likable person, trying to make her step daughter living with her and her husband, Patrick, work together. The book isn't real suspenseful but has enough tension to keep you wondering what will happen next.
