1642.
The civil war has ravaged England, and Tom Reed is returning from the Battle of Edgehill.
Back home, his tranquil farm does little to sooth his troubled thoughts, or erase the scenes of violence from his mind.
He is harbouring a dangerous secret which he cannot reveal to anyone.
His wife Bella immediately realises something is wrong. Where once he had been lively and affectionate, Tom was now withdrawn and silent, plagued by nightmares.
When Tom starts disappearing at night Bella is driven to breaking point, and she turns to Richard Bennet, a man he served with in the war.
Desperate to learn what happened at Edgehill Bella does all she can to gain Bennet’s confidence.
But how far will she have to go?
As Bennet starts to make romantic advances, Bella starts to become confused about her feelings.
Can she uncover her husband’s secret and repair their relationship?
Or will she be thrown into a new love?
As the country is thrown further into political turmoil and violence Tom and Bella’s lives become intimately caught up in war and secrecy, as brother is pitted against brother, and no one is sure who to trust…

REVIEW:
TIME SETTING 1642
WAR: English Civil War
DATE: 23rd October 1642
PLACE: At Kineton, near Banbury, in Oxfordshire
COMBATANTS: The forces of King Charles I against the forces of the English Parliament.
Size of the armies: The Royalist army comprised around 14,000 men, of which probably 3,000 were Horse, and 20 guns. The Parliamentary army was around 15,000, but a significant part of the army was in quarters, too far from the field to arrive in time to fight in the battle. Essex had around 4,000 Horse and some 40 cannon.
Tom Reed is coming home from the Battle of EdgeHill after the Civil War had destroyed England. He's gone home to his little peaceful farm, but peacefulness doesn't come. All he can see and remember is the tragedy and the death of his comrades. Tom is holding inside of himself a deep dark secret. Tom was once lively and loving. He has changed and his wife, Bella notices it. She becomes very concerned when Tom starts to leave during the night. She becomes worried and goes to Tom's old military friend, Richard Bennett. Bella needs to find out all she can about what happened at Edgehill so she tries her best to gain Richard's confidence. Bella becomes confused when Bennett starts to make romantic advances towards her. Will Bella find out what t he secret is and repair their relationship? Or will she find a new love? A wonderful, well written book of a historical war with hearts filled with love and concern behind the lines.
