When Jake's teacher assigns a "career" project, Jake decides he wants to be a soldier in the United States Army. Jake and his father visit an Army surplus store to find items he can use to present his project. As they search the store, each item makes the history and proud spirit of the U.S. Army come to life for Jake and readers alike. Through Jake's discoveries, readers are introduced to the history of the U.S. Army, what soldiers' duties include, and the equipment they use.
  • "As an educator, I am highly impressed with this motivating, engaging, and very informative Wigu book about America's Armed Forces. Families and teachers will find the book's content and lively illustrations to be both positive and very well expressed. Well done!" -Helene J. Sherman, Ed.D., Professor, Associate Dean for Educator Preparation, University of Missouri-St. Louis
REVIEW
Book One
The author explained what serving in the Army is like in a way that children can understand.  Not a lot of big words that only confuse the child.  The story tells some history of the Army, rankings of the enlisted and leaders,  some information about the medals and honors and also about the weaponry.
The story is about Jake and the class project he has to complete about being a soldier. It introduces the parent/child relationship as Jake's father takes him to the Army Surplus Store for items for Jake's class project.  It seems that each item that Jake finds seems to bring forth the Army's history and makes the spirit of our nation's heroes come to life.  The author makes the story real, not childlike.  The author puts forth the information in a way that doesn't bog the child down but only gathers his or her interest. For harder words there is a glossary in the back of the book. A great book that introduces our nation;s protective force to the children of the world.  This book isn't just for our boys but don't forget that our girls join in too.
I have to say that the illustrations were a big part of the book along with the cover.  They catch the reader's interest immediately.

I would recommend this book, not only to young readers, but teachers, club leaders and anyone who has an interest in our upcoming leaders.

I was given a complimentary copy of the book, WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE...IN THE U.S. ARMY - Jake Learns About The U.S. Army from the author Wigu Publishing for my view of the book. No other compensation took place.

I would give this book 5 STARS.

OVERVIEW
Book Two
(from Amazon)
Carlee always wanted to be a teacher when she grew up, until her mother is hired as a teacher at her school! Some of her friends are even in her mother's class. Carlee is worried. What will her friends say? Will her mother do something to embarrass her? Carlee vows never to become a teacher like her mother, but as she journeys through the first day of school with her own new teacher, Carlee makes some surprising discoveries.
  • "A fun story to enjoy with an important lesson about peer-group pressure, real or imagined.  In a class by itself."  -William H. Weintraub, Professor, University of Colorado, School of Journalism and Mass Communications
  •  "When I Grow Up I Want To Be...a Teacher! is a wonderful story about learning and teaching.  As a teacher myself, I value the way Carlee's dilemma allows her to actively engage with all she is learning on the first day of school.  Her story is one that will capture the imagination of young readers.  Parents will appreciate the emphasis on knowledge and the choices that Carlee considers.  History and science are conveyed in a fun and entertaining, as well as relevant, way." -Patricia O'Brien, Dean Emeritus of the College of Letters and Science, UCLA
  •  "Great book. Great inspiration. Recommended for everyone who wants to grow up to be someone special, doing something worthwhile."  -Dr. Theresa Daem, Superintendent, Laguna Beach Unified School District (retired). Chairman, NASS, National Association of School Superintendents

REVIEW
BOOK TWO
This is book two of the When I Grow Up I Want To Be Series.   Carlee's mom is a school teacher and Carlee is positive she doesn't want to be one.  She thinks of other things to be when she grows up besides being a teacher. I liked this part of the book since it shows the thinking that Carlee is doing about her possible future. There are so many of our young people who have no goals, don't have any occupation and have never known from childhood what they wanted to be when they grew up.  I believe when, as these books do, a child is introduced to possibilities of good vocations early on, some of those ideas stay with them.  Some of these children will become the leaders of our future.  Back to Carlee. She sees that her teachers aren't so bad and her friends love the Carlee's mom is a teacher.   I liked the fact that the author put in real pictures of life along with some cartoons. The author brings out the many different jobs that are out there for the picking.  The reader has choices and there are so many of them.
I would recommend this book series to anyone, not just children.  Teachers may find this series a good way to introduce children to their possible futures.

I received a complimentary copy of WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE A TEACHER...Carlee Learns A Surprising Lesson from the author, Wigu Publishing for my view of the book.  No other compensation took place.

I would give this book 5 STARS.
