OVERVIEW
(from Goodreads)
The war is over, but her struggle is just beginning.

Charlotte Fraser returns to her late father’s once-flourishing rice plantation on the Waccamaw River, determined to continue growing the special kind of rice known as Carolina Gold. But Fairhaven Plantation is in ruins, the bondsmen are free, and money is scarce.

To make ends meet, Charlotte reluctantly accepts a position as tutor to the young daughters of Nicholas Betancourt, heir to the neighboring Willowood Plantation. Then Nick’s quest to prove his ownership of Willowood sends Charlotte on a dangerous journey that reveals an old family mystery—and threatens all that she holds dear.

Inspired by the life of a 19th century woman rice planter, CAROLINA GOLD continues Dorothy Love’s winning tradition of weaving together mystery, romance, and rich historical detail, bringing to life the story of one young woman’s struggle to restore her ruined world.

REVIEW
I simply loved CAROLINA GOLD.  It was a well written, good clean read.  I didn't want to put it down.  The story starts with Charlotte Fraser. Charlotte's father recently died and she was only 12 years old when her mother died.  Charlotte has no one, she is alone.  The family's rice plantation, Fairhaven, is in ruins. So she is bound and determined to go to South Carolina which is in the Reconstruction Era. She is determined to start cultivating the superior strain of rice called CAROLINA GOLD.  Many problems to face with so few answers.  Charlotte takes up writing for the local newspaper.  She has very little cash and this helps some.   Her neighbor, Nicholas Betancourt who is  heir to Willowood Plantation has two little girls.  He is a widower and has asked Charlotte to tutor them since there is no school close by.  She agrees.  With trying to run Fairhaven, write for the newspaper and tutor two little girls, she has her hands full. Just when she was getting close to Nick,   she learns that Mr. Betancourt  may just be the rightful owner of Fairhaven. This sends Charlotte on a dangerous journey to uncover a hidden family secret. The book is inspired by a 19th century woman rice farmer. The book is a tribute to the beautiful Lowcountry.  Ms. Love gives you romance, mystery and a lot of historical detail.  What will happen to Fairhaven?  Will Charlotte give up and leave the Lowcountry?  What will happen to her relationship with Nick? Will Charlotte be able to restore her ruined world? Or, is all gone? At the end, I was wanting more, much more.  A sequel would be so nice.

I would give this book 5 KEYS. (Keys for the strongbox)

I received a complimentary copy of CAROLINA GOLD by Dorothy Love from Thomas Nelson and Litfuse Publishing for my unbiased view.

A WOMAN RICE PLANTER is the story of Elizabeth Allston Pringle and her plantation on the PeeDee River called Chicora Wood once in Plantersville, South Carolina. Chicora Wood was the inspiration for CAROLINA GOLD. (from Ms. Love's site)
