A stifling heat wave rolls into New York City, amplifying the already critical level of tension in the fragile concrete ecosystem. The air tastes of electricity—the negative charge of bad things to come—but everyone hopes it’s just the temperature. Then, on the morning homicide detective Alexandra “Hemi” Hemingway finds out she is pregnant, a twisted serial killer makes his debut. And the heat goes up. Not for the faint of heart—American Woman is a relentless ride that takes you through the fractured world of a nascent killer. And you will never feel safe again.

REVIEW
This is the author's third novel, AMERICAN WOMAN.  The story is full of violence with an ending that will definitely surprise you.  I didn't care for all of the violence. The author did write a novel that proved he is very talented keeping the reader's interest, while at the same time, making their hearts beat wildly from the sheer terror of what was taking place.  Even after you finish reading you still feel that terror from the book.
The story begins with Alexandra Hemingway kayaking on the Hudson River.  She had just found out she was going to have a baby.  This woman is no ordinary woman.  She is a NYPD detective, sharp mind, quick wit and has a interesting past.  She is not like other women.  She's six foot and she  had prevented a mugging by breaking a man's wrist and shot his accomplice with her own gun. The NYPD is faced with a serial killer.  They try to solve the case but these murders are not  random, they are planned with connections.  Phelps and Hemingway are in a time race to find this murderer and put him away before he hits again. While Hemingway is a woman driven, she is still a vulnerable woman.  This book is not for the light of heart or with a weak stomach.  The murders are off children and very horrific.  The author doesn't stop, he goes the whole nine yards.  The author keeps the reader guessing until the final end.  Will the mystery be solved?  Will the reader be wrong and again and again the murders will take place?  Will the murderer finally be put away for good or will he continue his hateful and terrible spree?  A little interesting note:  The book was originally published in the U.K. under the title RIVER OF THE DEAD.  That seemed to me to be an appropriate title instead of AMERICAN WOMAN.  AMERICAN WOMAN reminds me of the Guess Who's  song.  This book will stick in your mind for days on end. I would only recommend this book to those who like the real nitty gritty murder mystery story.

I was given a complimentary copy of AMERICAN WOMAN by Robert Pobi and Night Owl Reviews for my view of the book.  (copyright: Night Owl Reviews)

I would give this book 3 STARS.
