OVERVIEW (from Kregel Publications)
Evelyn Barrett has a new job, a new baby, and a new life--of sorts. Nearly crushed by the horrific abduction and murder of her daughter (book 1, Unholy Hunger), Evelyn is moving on as best she can.
No longer allowed to practice law, she is recruited by one of the detectives from her daughter's case to become a police consultant. Her inaugural case becomes a baptism by fire as she joins the hunt for a chillingly methodical and sadistic serial rapist and murderer.
Her revulsion and anger fuels a passion for justice . . . and then it becomes personal. Her friend and law school roommate, Jen, becomes a victim. The rapist has made a catastrophic mistake with Jen: he has left her alive and able to talk.
Filled with the chilling tension of Unholy Hunger, Hands of Darkness explores the emotional and spiritual consequences for all involved when justice and compassion collide head-on with the darkest examples of human depravity.
REVIEW
This is the second book of suspense that the author, Ms. James has written. The first book was UNHOLY HUNGER. This book  HANDS OF DARKNESS can be read as a stand alone.  We met Evelyn in the first book.    That is where Evelyn's daughter was kidnapped and killed.  Evelyn was an attorney and was disbarred after finding the killer.  She now has a new baby, named Owen and a new career. It's been hard for Evelyn to go on with her life.  She is still mourning the death of her daughter. Her daughter's case was being investigated by Thatcher.  He was  chasing a serial rapist and killer. He asks for Evelyn's help  Her husband, Eddie, Owen and herself move to San Diego.  She thought they could forget the awful memory of her daughter's death.  She finds the  attack and rape of her law school friends personal.  She wants to find the rapist but in the process she finds herself in danger.  She is a person who speaks her mind and is a strong woman.  Will she find the rapist/murderer?  What will happen to her int he process.? The author makes you feel like you are fighting for justice right along with Evelyn.

You will find stories of the killer as the author gives you a look into his mind. The book takes on a realistic view.  This kind of thing happens everyday. Maybe that' is why it can feel so real.  In today's society, evil lurks in the most unseen places. There are men who thrive on raping and killing.  It is just part of their lives.  They derive satisfaction from the crime.  They can't get enough. From page one you have a web that you have to un-weave as the tension builds.  The author provided descriptions that were in depth, not too graphic, but you know that you are right with Evelyn and the suspense keeps you turning the pages.  You want that killer found and justice served.  But does Evelyn have herself together enough, after her daughter's death and her friend's attack, to be level headed enough to catch this killer and find legal justice for the victims.?  The killer is nothing but evil and evil is cunning.  Evelyn has a mountain to climb in order to find him.

I would recommend this suspenseful novel to anyone who loves the murder mystery genre.  I loved the descriptions, the reality of the book and Evelyn;s strength.

I was given a complimentary copy of HANDS OF DARKNESS by Heather James from Kregel Publications for my view of the book.  No other compensation took place.

I would give this book 4 STARS.
