OVERVIEW
(from Goodreads)
Award-winning author Kaki Warner gives fans a reason to celebrate with the first in a brand-new Western trilogy set in Heartbreak, Colorado, starring an advance man for the railroad—and the woman whose trust (and heart) he longs to win. For fans of Linda Lael Miller and Jodi Thomas...

Hoping to escape his past, Ethan Hardesty left a career as an architect and went to work for the railroad. Only two things impede his desire to transform Heartbreak Creek into a thriving town once again—a vandal bent on stopping the railroad, and the beautiful but hardheaded woman who won’t sign over the final right-of-way through the canyon.

Audra Pearsall has good reason for not allowing a train to pass within yards of her home, no matter how persuasive the handsome Mr. Hardesty can be. But when vandalism escalates to murder and fear stalks the canyon, Audra doesn’t know who to turn to—until the man she thought was her friend proves to be an enemy, and the man she wouldn’t allow herself to trust becomes her reluctant hero…

REVIEW

"Another letter came today."
(first sentence)

From the RUNAWAY BRIDES trilogy, we enter 1871 in Heartbreak Creek which is Colorado territory.  BEHIND HIS BLUE EYES is Book One in the trilogy.  You will love it.  It has that Kaki Warner's flair.  There are some new characters in this book.  An architect, Ethan Hardesty, who became an advance man for the railroad and Audra Pearsall, a wish I were an author. Ethan hopes to win her trust and love.  She takes care of her father who has dementia. So much is going on.  Sabotage, murder, a strange trial marriage.   Ms. Warner has written a historical Western that  she has added some twists and turns.   A hero and a heroine who both want the same things but in a different way.Only two things are stopping him from making Heartbreak Creek a thriving town again.  One is a vandal wanting to stop the railroad, and second,  Audra, a hardheaded but lovely woman.  She has the right of way to the canyon and doesn't want to sign it away.  She has a good reason for not wanting a train to come so close to her home.  Mr. Hardesty can be quite persuasive and quite handsome.  It started out as vandalism but soon turned into murder.  Now Audra doesn't know who to trust  until she allows herself to trust Ethan who  becomes her reluctant hero. This book can be read as a stand alone.  The author takes each character and explains their personalities and quirks. The book will make you smile and giggle a little.  Then there are times when you are on the edge of your seat wondering how the town will overcome the danger they are in.
We have an old west serial killer on the loose. Is it one of the town members or someone who came in on the railroad?  Will our hero and heroine find a middle ground and finally wed?

  • “He could love this stubborn, gentle woman. With her, he could regain the peace that had eluded him for so long, and maybe even find his redemption. With her, he might find the will to put the past behind him.”  Ethan

Ms. Warner once again gave her talents to us.  Another wonderful book that holds your attention and leaves you wanting more.

I would give this book 4 STARS.

I was given a complimentary copy of BEHIND HIS BLUE EYES from the author, Kaki Warner and Manic Readers  for my honest view. No other ccompensation took place.
